Small Kitchen Electrics - DO YOU REALLY NEED IT?

You are looking online or at a store and you see some cool electric kitchen gadget.  You really want it.  Take a pause for a moment and ask yourself these questions:

  1. What else can I do with this $$$?
  2. Does this serve more than one purpose?
  3. Am I going to use it to death for a few weeks and then it gets put in the cupboard and maybe taken out a couple times per year?
  4. Is there something else that I want more than this?
  5. Can I make the same thing with a different gadget or a pot or pan?
BUT...  Sivi, it's my choice though, it's my money... who are you to tell me how to spend my hard earned money?

Yes, this is true.  Let me explain.  Let's assume you pay middle-of-the-road prices for your items:

Crock Pot:  $70.00
Rice Cooker: $30.00
Pressure Cooker: $70.00

These are 3 electrics, grand total $170.00.  Middle of the Road all in one unit, approximately $120.00.  (Savings: $50.00)  Or, get the top of the line for roughly the same price as the three units.

How often do you plan to use these?  Be honest.  You might use the hell out of them for a few months and then they are banished to the cabinet and only used every so often.  Instant Pot is the rage.  They are brilliant, and I wish I had one.  For this simple reason:  I can get rid of 3 items in my cabinet.  That's the other thing, do you have enough places to hide your small electrics?  I can always be guaranteed to go to any thrift store or garage sale and find a variety of crock pots and rice cookers.  After watching This is Us, and the episode when Jack dies, I no longer consider buying a used crock pot.  I have the same fear of the toaster as well.

Which comes back to Toasters, Toaster Ovens and Air Fryers.  This is a hill that I am willing to die on.  Air Fryers are glorified Tabletop Convection Ovens.  Period.  So, if you have a toaster, a toaster oven (with or without Convection), and an Air Fryer...  Ask yourself why.

It's the redunancies that is killing your kitchen space and your wallet.
